Vineyard Management
We have been using the Scott Henry system of split canopy management for many years.

However, we are now using a modified version where one vine has two canes, as before, but instead of both canes being on the same level they are trained so that one produces shoots that grow down and the other grows vertical shoots. Experience has shown that vines with the shoots trained down tend to be less vigorous (good) BUT that the fruit is less ripe.  The inventor of this system, Scott Henry III also noticed this and experimented.

The system that we are using is the result.  The mix of high and low canes allows the vine itself to balance the nutrient needs and vigour producing a more even spread of fruit across the levels.

The pictures below show how the one vine is pruned to the two levels.
